# How to outsource web development to India: a guide for US businesses

What you can hand over, what it costs, how the hours line up with the US, what to put in writing and how to check an agency before you pay anything.

To outsource web development to India from the US, pick an agency whose past work you can check, agree the scope, price and ownership in writing before any work starts, keep the domain, hosting and ad accounts in your own name, and plan around the time difference, which lets work move while your office is closed. This guide covers each step: what you can hand over, what it costs, how the hours line up, what to put in writing and how to pay. The same steps apply when you outsource digital marketing, such as SEO or ads.

Key takeaways

- Outsourcing a defined project means paying for that project, not for a full-time hire: a US web developer's median pay was $92,650 a year in May 2025.
- Get the scope, the price and who owns the finished work in writing before work starts.
- Keep the domain, hosting, analytics and ad accounts in your own name, and give the agency access to them.
- India does not change its clocks, so the gap with the US shifts by an hour when US clocks change.
- Check real work, public reviews and who you will actually talk to before you pay anything.

## Why US businesses outsource to India

The first reason is cost. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for web developers at $92,650 and for web and digital interface designers at $104,000, both in May 2025 ([BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, web developers and digital designers](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/web-developers.htm)). If you need one website, a store or a few months of SEO, hiring someone full time for it rarely makes sense. Outsourcing lets you pay for the project or the month instead.

The second reason is time. Because India is many hours ahead of the US, an agency there works while your office is closed. Feedback you send at the end of your day can be done by the time you start the next one.

Cost alone is a poor reason to pick a team, though. A cheap quote that leaves you without the site you need, or without the logins to it, costs more in the end. The rest of this guide is about avoiding that.

## What you can outsource

Most of what a small or mid-sized business needs online can be done by a remote team, because it is delivered as files, code and access rather than in person:

- **Websites and online stores**, from a business site to a Shopify or WooCommerce store. Our [website design and development](https://ndcompany.in/services/website-design-development) page lists what a build includes.
- **SEO**, the technical fixes, page content and monthly reporting that bring visitors from search.
- **Ads and social media**, run from your own ad accounts, with the ad spend paid by you directly to Google or Meta. Our [digital marketing](https://ndcompany.in/services/digital-marketing) page explains how that works.
- **Design and video**, such as logos, brand identities, social media posts and edited video.

Keep in house whatever needs someone in the room, such as filming at your premises, and anything only you can decide, such as prices and offers.

## Outsourcing digital marketing

Outsourced digital marketing works best when you hand over the doing and keep the deciding. The agency sets up and runs the campaigns, writes and designs the posts, fixes the site for search and reports on the results. You keep the budget, the offers, the approvals and the accounts.

A few things make it work from the first month:

- **Your accounts, your spend.** The ad accounts, the analytics and the social profiles stay in your name. Ad spend goes from your card to Google or Meta directly, and the agency's fee covers the work, never the spend.
- **One goal per channel.** Calls, form leads or sales, agreed before the first campaign, so the monthly report measures something you care about.
- **A monthly report you can read.** What was done, what it cost and what came of it, in plain words, with the numbers from your own analytics.
- **Approvals in your hours.** With the time difference, the agency can prepare work overnight and send it for approval when your day starts.

SEO takes longer to show results than ads do, so judge it over months, not weeks, and ask for the list of changes made each month as well as the traffic figures.

## What it costs

Prices vary by agency and by scope, so treat any figure as a starting point until you have a written quote. As an example, these are our own starting prices for US clients, set in US dollars for the US market rather than converted from rupees:

**N&D Co. starting prices for US clients**

| Service | Starts at | Billed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Website design and development | $149 | Per project |
| E-commerce store | $239 | Per project |
| SEO | $129 | Per month |
| Digital marketing and ads management | $95 | Per month, ad spend paid by you |

Other Indian agencies rarely publish prices: in our [survey of 108 agency websites](https://ndcompany.in/blogs/agency-prices-india), 35 of the 101 we could read showed any. Every service's tiers are on our [pricing page](https://ndcompany.in/pricing), and our guide to [what a small business website costs](https://ndcompany.in/blogs/small-business-website-cost) breaks down the build, domain, hosting and store costs in US dollars. Whatever you are quoted, check what the price includes: the number of pages, revisions, the support after launch, and whether hosting and the domain are in it.

## How the time difference works

India uses one time zone, 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC, and does not use daylight saving time ([Wikipedia on time in India](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_India)). The gap with the US therefore changes by an hour when US clocks change.

Our working day is 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in India. On the East Coast that is 11:30 PM to 8:30 AM while US daylight saving time is on, and 10:30 PM to 7:30 AM when it is off. On the West Coast it ends at 5:30 AM in summer and 4:30 AM in winter. In practice:

- Send feedback at the end of your day, and the changes can be ready at the start of your next one.
- For a live call, early morning on the East Coast overlaps the end of our day.
- Agree how quickly each side answers messages, so nobody waits a whole day for a reply that takes a minute.

## What to agree in writing

Most outsourcing problems come from things nobody wrote down. Before work starts, the quote or agreement should cover:

- **Scope.** The pages, features, platforms and deliverables, and how many rounds of changes are included.
- **Price and billing.** A fixed price or an hourly rate, the currency, and when each payment is due.
- **Ownership.** Which finished work becomes yours and when. Under our [terms of service](https://ndcompany.in/terms), ownership of the final deliverables named in your quote passes to you once the final payment clears.
- **Accounts.** The domain, hosting, analytics and ad accounts should be in your name or your company's, with access given to the agency, so you keep them whatever happens.
- **Support.** What happens after launch. We include a 7-day support window for minor corrections, with ongoing maintenance as a separate package.
- **Confidentiality.** If you are an agency reselling the work, an NDA, and a clear rule that the team never contacts your client.

## Sharing access and data safely

An outsourced team needs access to your systems, but it never needs your own password. Give each person a user account of their own in your website, hosting, analytics and ad accounts, with only the permissions the work needs. That way you can see who changed what, and you can remove the access the day a project ends.

Share only the customer data the work needs. A website build rarely needs your customer list at all, and an ads campaign needs the audience, not the people's details. If the work does need personal data, agree in writing how it is kept and when it is deleted.

## How to pay

Ask to be invoiced in US dollars, so the price you agreed is the price you pay. Our US clients pay by PayPal, through Wise or by bank transfer. Each charges its own fees, so check them before the first invoice. Splitting a project into milestone payments, such as a deposit at the start and the rest on delivery, keeps both sides committed.

## A freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer can be the right choice for one clearly defined job, such as a landing page or a set of fixes, especially if you can review the work yourself. Ask what happens if they are ill or busy when you need a change.

An agency suits work that crosses skills, such as a website that also needs a logo, SEO and ads, or anything you want looked after month after month. You get one point of contact and one quote, and the work does not stop when one person is away. Ask who will actually do the work and whether you can talk to them.

## How to check an agency before you hire

**Checklist for choosing an agency**

| Check | What to look for |
| --- | --- |
| Real work | Live sites or case studies you can open, not only mockups |
| Public reviews | Reviews on Google or another platform that the agency does not control |
| Who you talk to | The person doing or leading the work, not only a sales contact |
| A written quote | Scope, price, ownership and support named before you pay |
| Your accounts | Willing to work inside accounts you own |
| A small first step | A paid first project or milestone before a long commitment |

A short call answers most of this. If you want to try us, you can [book a free 15-minute call](https://ndcompany.in/book-a-call), and our page for [US businesses](https://ndcompany.in/locations/usa) explains how we work with clients there. Agencies that want to resell the work under their own name can read about our [white label service](https://ndcompany.in/white-label).
